HAPPINESS vs. JOY

Happiness and joy are two different things. Happiness is based on feelings and joy is purely based on  emotion.  Happiness is more concern on what is happening around us. Maybe someone is happy because of his promotions, rewards and other worldly recognitions. It is more on external affairs. However, joy is purely emotional condition that would last longer.  We can be joyful while under painful situations, knowing that God is in control. “When anxiety is great within me, your consolation brought me joy”(Psalm 94:19). It based on deep, spiritual aspects. Joy is the result of trusting God despite of the tests. It comes from the heart of every human being who trusted God in whatever circumstances that life has to offer. It is the product of our strong devotions to God. And we can still rejoice even in stormy days. “Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:1-4).  No one could steal the joy that God has planted in the hearts of men. Happiness is measured on material and physical aspects. It is the good outcome of your work, relationships, goals and earthly recognitions. And this is such a fleeting thing.

Joy  however, is eternal, contagious and powerful emotions. Happiness is just motivated by circumstances. Maybe you’re happy because you own a brand new car, a beautiful house, a promising career or just receive the prestigious award. Thus, a happy person is the one, who accumulated earthly power and timely recognitions. This person is indeed, happy because he is being applauded by the society because of his status in life as well as his accomplishments. He might be powerful and famous. However, joy is not present in his life, he has been looking for it, but ended up frustrated. His deep search for real joy is useless, for he is too much attached with the worldly things that unable him to know true happiness. Joy on the other hand, is found in the simple living. A person who used to live simply so that others may just simply lived. He found real peace and hope abounds in his life. He might be in much poverty, lacking of so many material things, and not even known in the society, but he is still blissful because, this person is contented with his life. He recognize the Giver of the blessings he has been receiving-God.

Joy is a priceless gift that he possess in this life. Tim Hansel, said it well, “ Happiness is not the same as joy. Because circumstances allow happiness, they can also make happiness dissolve into thin air. Joy, on the other hand, defies circumstances. It can coexist with doubt, ambiguity, and pain. It is contentedness beyond circumstances, an indestructible kind of confidence.” Joy is seldom possess when it is finally found many of us, will do everything to have it permanently. It is a  lasting, priceless, selfless and awesome experience we ever had. Let us choose to be joyful than just to be happy. Are you searching for happiness? No. We need to seek for this lasting and real happiness that would keep us away from wanting what is just external and fleeting feelings and just based on worldly riches and honor.

Thus, Keep on looking for this priceless gift that can’t be bought with silver or gold. It is found in every human heart that is willing to do everything to attend this life’s maximum level of satisfaction-Joy. Keep the faith! Rejoice! Always be joyful my friend.
